, "We will need lots of worker bees-about 30 volunteers-to make our Honey Festival in October a success. These jobs do not take much commitment, just a few hours on one day, but they are absolutely vital. Please look over the list and pick out one job you would like to do, then call me (410-239-7496). I would be very grateful if you can save me hours on the telephone hunting for volunteers.
The Festival will be held October 10 from 10-4 at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center's National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel, just off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295). We will set up the day before, Friday Oct. 9, starting at 1 pm.
Needed on Friday:

Strong backs to help unload trucks and set up tables

Screen tent

Beehive

Kids games

Candle-making equipment

Honey Extractor and uncapping gear

Honey (3 full supers) to extract

Mock Apiary (3 or 4 empty beehives)

Needed Saturday (some are scheduled, others ongoing, 3-hour shifts: if we get enough people, the shifts can be 2 hours)

Observation hive-show people what is going on inside-ongoing, 1 person

Open hive demonstrations-four scheduled, 1 or 2 people

Honey Extracting Demonstration-four scheduled, 2 or 3 people

Candle-making demo-ongoing, 1 or 2 people

Honey sales table-one helper needed, ongoing

Conduct kids games-ongoing, 2 people

Mock Apiary-- show the various parts and uses of the beehive, 1 or 2 people

Bee Rodeo-six beekeepers for smoker-lighting contest (bring your own smoker & fuel)

General Helpers-2 or 3 people to help wherever needed

Honey Sales Booth
There will be one booth conducting all sales, through MSBA.  Anyone volunteering at the festival is eligible to sell honey at our booth.  Items must be top-quality honey or beeswax products (no pollen or royal jelly), accepted on consignment Friday afternoon or Saturday before 10 only.  Put your label on your products.  We set prices unless you have something unique: $7 for 1-lb., $13 2 lb., $8 round section, $12 square or cut-comb, $10 chunk 1 lb., and so on.  Split 75% beekeeper, 25% MSBA/Friends of Patuxent (they get 10%, we get 15%).  Honey sells much better if you include variety labels and a squeezable taster with pointed cap.  We have some if you don't.  All leftover items must be picked up after the festival between 4 and 5 pm.  Call Steve McDaniel at 410-239-7496 if you want to consign items so we will know what to expect."]);

      NoticesArray.push([48, 1, "President's Message by Steve McDaniel", "Sept 2009", ""
         , "I made a mistake this year. (Only one, you ask?) Being a Master Beekeeper doesn't mean that I don't make mistakes, it means that I've made them all! I do try to learn from them, though, and I really learned a lesson this year.
Just before leaving for a month-long trip in early July, I put one super on each colony. (No one can accuse me of not being an optimist!) The hives already had several full supers from the main nectar flow. We were getting some rain, unlike last year, and I thought there just might be a small summer flow. Now, everybody knows that in Central Maryland, there is no summer nectar flow. By the end of May, or the end of June if there are some basswood trees around, the nectar shuts off like a switch. You'll never guess what the bees did to those supers!
When it comes to Maximizing Honey Yields, (sounds like the title of a talk, doesn't it?), Keith Tignor knows all the tricks, and that's his first topic-actually, 'Sustainable Apiculture: How To Maximize Honey Yields'. He's Virginia's State Apiarist and our main speaker at the September 26 meeting at the Oregon Ridge Nature Center just north of Baltimore. I don't want to miss this one-maybe I'll find out what I did wrong.
Keith's second talk is entitled 'Bees and Pesticides: Should You Worry?' You'll be amazed at what the scientists have found in beehives that the beekeepers didn't put there.
Other speakers will expound on What To Do Now To Keep Your Bees Alive, current conditions in Maryland, and the Latest Research On Honey Bees. Wayne Esaias, our very own rocket scientist (well, NASA oceanographer and climatologist, but close enough) is attending Apimondia, the world congress of apiculture, in France early this month, and he will report on all the new stuff he learns there.
Also on the program is the Honey Show, moved up from the November 21 meeting at the Maryland Department of Agriculture (mark your calendar!) so the entries will be fresher and perhaps more plentiful. We need lots of entries to make it a decent show, so bring your honey and everything else you can think of (all the classes and rules are on the website, and maybe a registration form you can fill out ahead of time). Lots of ribbons and prize money (yes, $$$$$) go begging every year for lack of entries, especially in the youth categories. Besides, it's fun to see how you do against other beekeepers. Bring some return address labels so you don't have to write your name twice on every tag. This year, we will have all entries identified and give you time to look them over before they are released.
Don't forget our Honey Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 10 from 10-4 at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. It's also called the National Wildlife Visitor Center, and it's located just off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway on Powder Mill Rd. in Laurel. We can use some more worker bees, so if you want to help in some small way, call me at 410-239-7496. Volunteers will be allowed to consign honey at the sales booth, and at last year's festival, we sold a lot! Tell your friends and family about the festival, too.
So what did the bees do to those supers I so foolishly put on at the wrong time?  They packed them full and had burr comb between the boxes, also packed full!  My mistake was in putting on only one super per hive-I should have added at least two.  I just wasn't optimistic enough."]);

			,"There are currently three (3) openings for FarmServe Africa for Beekeeping and Value Added Bee Products Specialist, for March, April and May 2006. This 3-week assignment would take you to Ghana or Nigeria, West Africa, to teach farmers about how they can take beekeeping to a production level that is renewable and sustainable. Currently farmers 'wild craft' honey and bee products, and use fire/smoke to harvest, and are generally not taking advantage of beekeeping as an added source of revenue for the farm. Additionally, relative to other income-generating activities a farm could begin, it is low cost/capital to start up, which is a huge plus in places like Africa where people have generally very little savings or extra money to invest. Your work would enable farmers who are already producing vegetables and other products to add bee products to their list, and be able to generate added income that can they can use to pay for school fees for children, health care needs, and also help the farm business grow.
Beekeeping is not new to Africa, by any stretch, but the idea of adding value to basic bee products is something that has a lot of potential, and is generating a lot of interest among our farmer clientele in Africa. Farmers have been asking us to help them understand how to make/produce the following types of products, using cost-effective and low-tech means.
Honey—how do you grade? What makes quality honey? How to market the different grades/types. Bee Pollen, Honey Comb—Bee Products for Health, Apitherapy, how to market that and use as substitute for imported health products. Beeswax for premium products—such as beauty products, lip balm, salves, etc. Beeswax for home use products--Making candles locally (they are mostly imported right now, and most rural people use them everyday)? Bee products for treating wood, waterproofing textiles and paper. Royal Jelly—currently imported from China when it is available. Biodiversity—what do bees add to the biodiversity of a farm? What does that mean?
All expenses are paid except for your time. You are cared for and guided during your stay, and provided a thorough technical and cultural orientation prior to departing the US. FarmServe Africa is a USAID Farmer-to-Farmer program led by OIC International. OIC International works primarily in Africa and has as its mission to help others help themselves through sustainable and practical training. Agriculture is just one of the many topics we are involved with.
If you or someone you know is a Beekeeping/Bee Products Specialist who would be able to teach on a very basic, low-tech level, please contact me immediately. NoticesArray.push([15,0, "The Hibernation Diet", "March 2006", ""
			,"On January 1st 2006 a book will be published by Souvenir Press (London), called The Hibernation Diet.
This book will have a dramatic impact on sales of honey in the UK and beyond.
The book, which advocates taking honey before bed, to optimise fat loss during sleep, is already causing unprecedented levels of interest from the media prior to publication.
In January 2005, a few articles in the press about this approach to weight loss, before the book was written, caused some supermarkets in Scotland to have their shelves cleared of honey.
The book arose out of the authors' work in sports nutrition, whereby they have been advising athletes for some years to take honey prior to bed to optimise recovery. This information has leaked out into the athletic community nationally and has already impacted on honey sales nationally, in 2005.
However recovery biology is exclusively fat burning biology and arising from this, the authors developed a strategy for optimising fat burning during sleep by fuelling the liver prior to bed, culminating in the book (The Hibernation Diet).
Honey, which contains fructose, is ideal for this purpose.
The publicity agents for this revolutionary book are Midas, the company who handled publicity for the Atkins Diet.
The authors can testify that, not only does the diet work, but the public love the strategy and tune in immediately and enthusiastically, whenever the theory is explained to them. Simply, if the liver is fuelled prior to bed, recovery hormones are released to do repair, regeneration and construction of new tissue. These hormones are exclusively fat burning hormones. For this to occur, blood glucose must be stable, and for this to occur, the liver must be fuelled prior to bed. Up to now, few do this, the liver depletes, blood glucose falls and adrenal stress hormones, which do not burn fat, are released.
The book is based on several years of research into recovery biology and although the theory and the biological principles it unitises are quite simple, they have been ignored up to now, not only by the medical profession, but also by those who offer advice to would-be dieters. For this reason the impact will be all the greater.
It is important therefore that the honey industry, at each level, production, supply and retail, are aware of this in advance, so that they can maximise the potential impact on sales in 2006 and prepare for a quite amazing and dramatic year ahead.
As authors of the book we very much want the book to be discussed at every level within the honey industry, so that a mutually beneficial dynamic may develop whereby sales of the book drive forward sales of honey and sales of honey drive forward sales of the book. Visit: www.HibernationDiet.com The book is available from www.Amazon.co.uk
Kind Regards Mike and Stuart McInnes (authors) Hibernation Diet.
The authors may be contacted on 011 44 131 622 5101 or 011 44 141 847 0565 or info@hibernationdiet.com"]);

You bring up to 3, one pound glass or plastic bottles of your famous, wonderful and perfect honey to the meeting. It has to have your label on it, and something (either directly on the label or a second label on top or the back) that tells what kind of honey it is, and, if possible, when you harvested it. If it has all of that, when you arrive at Registration, you turn in your 3 bottles, and we’ll give you 3 Honey Exchange Tickets. Then, your honey goes on display so everyone can see what's available. They'll be able to look at all the fancy labels, at the varieties, at all the colors and kinds of honey that MSBA members produce. Please bring 3 bottles that are all the same variety, color and flavor.

Then at the end of the meeting, bring your Honey Exchange Tickets to the table and you can pick and choose from all the honey that others have brought.
